Character Name: Norman Babcock
Series: Paranorman
Timeline: Mid-movie, after finding out that the zombie puritans just want the curse to end
Canon Resource Link: Wiki!
Character History: Norman Babcock was born with the ability to see ghosts, a trait that apparently ran in his mother's side of the family and turned up at random. Unfortunately he was also born into a painfully normal family that didn't understand his abilities and didn't really believe that he could both see and speak to the dead. This isolation continued into his school life where Norman was bullied for being weird by the other kids. The only person in his family who really tried to understand him was his grandmother, who swore she'd always be there for him. Faced with a general lack of understanding from almost everyone he knew, Norman became a pretty lonely kid. In a town obsessed with its history of witchcraft and the supposed curse the witch laid down on her prosecutors, it wasn't always good to be different.
Overall, despite talking to dead people no one else could see, Norman grew up as a normal kid. He loved zombie movies, went to school and generally kept to himself. A few months before the start of the movie Norman's grandmother passed away but didn't move on. Instead her ghost lingered on, adding new tension to the house as he tried to communicate between her and the rest of his family. His father thought that Norman was making it all up for attention and his mother tried her best to understand. His big sister Courtney made it clear she thought he was a freak.
Things continued like this for a long time but nothing can stay the same forever and change came to Norman's life whether he liked it or not. He began to have a visions at school which didn't help his reputation as a weirdo. He was also approached by his estranged uncle Mr. Prenderghast who revealed that he could also see ghosts and that he needed Norman to take over preventing the witch's curse from fulfilling itself. But before he could finish his explanation Norman's new (and first) friend Neil chased him off. Of course telling Mr. Prenderghast to go away didn't stop the visions and instead they got worse, causing Norman to cause a scene in the middle of a school play where he had a vision of the undead rising from the grave. Needless to say this didn't help his standing at school or his strained relationship with his parents.
The next day Norman gets visited by the spirit of Mr. Prenderghast in the bathroom, revealing that he had died of a stroke and needed Norman to take over the duty of stopping the witch's curse. After forcing Norman to promise to retrieve a book from his home to read at the witch's grave before the sunset that. With that accomplished his ghost passed on to the afterlife. Overwhelmed with the responsibility and scared of messing things up, Norman ran home and thought about just ignoring his promise. It was his grandma's ghost who helped set his resolve by telling him: “There’s nothing wrong with being scared, Norman, so long as you don’t let it change who you are.” as well as telling him that she didn't move on to the afterlife because she promised to always be there for him. Realizing that he had to keep his promise even if he was scared, Norman decided to act.
He snuck out and went to get the book. Following a gross interlude where he had to wrestle with his dead uncle's body to get the book Norman made it to the graveyard where the witch's victims were buried. He started to read the book only to discover that it was a book of fairy tales, but before he could finish the story one of the bullies from his school, Alvin, found him and started to pick a fight. This ended up distracting Norman long enough for the sun to set and release the witch's spirit from her long slumber. The sky darkened with a supernatural cloud. Even worse, Norman and Alvin watched as seven zombies clawed their way out of their graves and started to chase both boys.
They only escaped from the zombies after an extended chase when Neil'sbig brother Mitch ended up hitting one of the zombies with his van. There was another chase scene while the leader of the zombie puritans tried to break into the van where Norman realized that he'd read the book at the wrong grave. After getting advice from a girl at his school the group (including Mitch, Courtney, Neil and Alvin) ended up heading for the historic Town Hall in order to search their records room. While the zombies caused a riot in town, Norman and the others searched for information about where the witch's grave was located. But after time passed without success Norman got into an argument with Courtney about what the point was and demanded that they all leave.
Left alone, he was without support when the seven zombies snuck into the records room and surrounded Norman. Norman ran from them up to the roof and discovered the dark cloud was directly over the city hall and ready to wreak havoc on the entire town because of the witch's wrath. So of course the eleven year old boy decided to do the reasonable thing and climb the Town Hall's tower to try and read the book to the witch. Instead of being put back to rest by the book the witch used her power to strike the book with lightning, making it unreadable.
Falling from the tower, Norman was given another vision. This time it was a glimpse into the truth about the witch's curse. He watched as seven Puritans accused Agatha Prenderghast, a 10 year old medium just like him, of witchcraft and sentenced her to death by hanging. Scared and angry, Agatha cursed the puritans with her powers before she was killed. When he woke up Norman was horrified by what he had learned. The zombies approached him and revealed that they had been following him to try and beg him to stop the curse because he was the only one who could hear their real voices. Each one was consumed with guilt over what they had done and just wanted to put things to rest forever. The puzzle pieces all started to fall into place as Norman realized that the book was a bedtime to put a little girl to sleep for another year. Resolved to fix things and help Agatha find real peace, Norman led the zombies out of the town hall, at which point he's going to end up in Wonderland and be really confused.
Abilities/Special Powers: Norman is a medium, which in the context of the movie grants him the ability to communicate the dead whether they're ghosts or zombies. He's also been shown to have visions related to the dead. Otherwise he's your average 11 year old kid.
Third-Person Sample: Wonderland is lonely in a way Norman isn't used to. Back home he's used to being able to walk down any given street and see the spirits of the people who died there, he's known them all his life and they treat him like an old friend. But in Wonderland... there's just people. Really weird people but they're alive and it's something he's still not sure how to handle it. It isn't Blithe Hollow and it feels like the entire world is upside down. He doesn't have to go to school, he has a room with a magic closet.
No one has called him a freak or vandalized his door.. But he's still alone and that nagging worry that the witch, that Agatha, was going to rip Blithe Hollow apart while he'ss away. He's lost the Zombie Puritans and even Courtney and he never thought he'd miss Courtney calling him names but he really does. She's his sister and he loves her even when she's mean to him.
When he stepped through the Town Hall door and stepped out into the garden maze he was convinced he was having another vision. Everything was so strange that when it didn't melt away to the real world after a day he started to realize that everything was incredibly real. And now that he's had time to adjust to it all he still doesn't know how to handle it, not really. He doesn't have his grandma to give him advice or anyone.
The moment Norman decided to lead the zombies out of the Town Hall and into the mob outside is one of the scariest of his life, but he knew he has to. He promised to help end the curse because Agatha deserved to have some peace because she was so horribly angry and the zombies regretted the horrible thing they did to her. But now he's stuck where he can't do anything and feels totally useless. Which is why a few days after arriving Norman walks into the library with a zombie backpack (generously provided by his magical closet) with the determination to learn anything he can about his abilities. If he's going to be stuck in some weird place far from home he's going to go back prepared for whatever the witch's curse can throw at him.
After all, he made a promise.
First-Person Sample: [ video; ]
[ The camera on the device turns on to... a very up close and personal look at Norman's nostrils. You're welcome for that. But he pulls back enough that people can see his entire face. He's holed up in the library, back resting against one of the shelves. ]
Hi there. Um... I was wondering what people did here for fun. Like... movies or games or something.
[ He rubs the back of his neck nervously and looks away from the camera. He's not good at this whole talking to people thing. ]
Or school, I guess. I never thought I'd miss it... [ and then in less of a mumble: ] I'm probably missing a lot of social studies classes. It just feels weird to just sit around and do nothing.
It leaves me with a lot of time to think about stuff. [ Like how much he misses his grandma and how he still has to save his entire town from a witch. ]
